Coach Steve is originally from Tucson, Arizona, and moved to Columbia, Maryland in 1992. He attended Howard County public schools and was a three-sport athlete at Wilde Lake High School, earning three varsity letters in football and wrestling while serving as captain of the lacrosse team.
Steve began his swimming career in 1992 with the Wilde Lake Watercats (CNSL) and later competed for the Columbia Clippers. He started coaching with the Columbia Clippers, working with multiple competitive groups before advancing to Lead Coach of the Senior Elite group.
In the summers of 2007 and 2008, Steve served as an intern with the University of Maryland Football Strength & Conditioning Department, further developing his expertise in athletic performance.
He returned to summer swimming in 2009 as Head Coach of Thunder Hill (CNSL), where he coached for four seasons, including two undefeated campaigns.
Steve is widely recognized for his 13-year tenure with UMBC Swimming & Diving/Retriever Aquatic Club. During that time, he served as the National Training Group Assistant Swim Coach under Brandt Nigro, Chris Gibeau and Chad Craddock and as the Retriever Aquatic Club Head Strength and Conditioning Coach.
Since joining NSJ in 2012, Coach Steve has led the program to three Division I CMSL titles.
He holds bachelor’s degrees in Kinesiology & Physical Education from Towson University and Exercise Science Certifications from the University of Arizona, as well as a master’s degree in Secondary Education and Educational Leadership from Towson University. Steve also served as a Strength and Conditioning Graduate Assistant for the University of Maryland(Football). Steve is currently Physical Educator for HCPSS and resides in Frederick County with his family.
Coach Abbi is excited to return for her 8th summer as an assistant coach at NSJ. She herself was a former NSJ Blue Marlin and spent her younger years at NSJ lifeguarding, teaching swim lessons, and helping as a junior coach for the 6 & under group. She grew up swimming competitively for GBSA until she graduated from Mount Hebron High School in 2015. She then went on to swim at the University of Maryland on the club swim team. In 2019, she graduated from UMD with a degree in Animal Science. She recently returned to school to receive her Masters of Arts in Teaching at UMBC and now works as a high school biology teacher in Baltimore City
Coach Genna is excited to start coaching with the NSJ team this summer. She has been living in Ellicott City her entire life and swimming with NSJ since she was 7. She is an active member of the NSJ community, as she has been lifeguarding, giving swim lessons, and doing NSJ camp since she was 15. She swam with the Eagle Swim Team from 2017-2024, before graduating from Mt. Hebron last year. She now attends Frostburg State University where she continues her swimming career and studies Emerging Media with minors in Journalism and Public Relations. Before college, Coach Genna set three NSJ Swim Team records, qualified for Maryland Swimming State Championships, and attended the Speedo Sectionals Meet. At Frostburg, she was MEC conference champion in all of her events and helped break 8 team records her freshman season."
Coach Madison is excited to join the NSJ coaching staff this summer! She began swimming with NSJ when she was 7, and swam for Eagle Swim Team for 9 years. She has been lifeguarding, giving swim lessons, and junior coaching for the swim team for the past few years. She graduated from Marriotts Ridge High School last year and is now a rising sophomore at High Point University where she studies Elementary Education with a minor in Special Education. She is also a member of the club swim team at HPU.
Coach Kaitlyn is excited to join the NSJ coaching staff this summer! Kaitlyn has swam for NSJ for the past 12 years and has enjoyed helping junior coach for the 6 & under group. She has swam competitively for GBSA and the Dancel Y. She recently graduated from Mt.Hebron High School and is excited to attend Elon University in the fall as an Exercise Science Major in the Accelerated Physician’s Assistant Program.
